Violin Making Workbook

Design

Graduations/Arching
The instrument's power is achieved through the longitudinal arching of the plates. Articulation of the sound is achieved through the refinement of the cross archings of the plates.

Outline - corners
The VMS method of doing rib mitres leads to corners that are excessively long. Hence the outline of the corner becomes overly long. While this may not be as noticeable on the plate itself, it becomes very noticeable in the purfling. Consequent to this, the angle at which the purfling meets is very acute. This makes the plate at the corner long and thin and therefore easily broken during the cutting of the purfling channel.

I have been a violin maker for 43 years and I am proud of the reputation I have built. I am especially proud of the fact that many of today's most well known musicians have acquired multiple instruments of mine over the years; affirming the fact that not only do my instruments retain their sound quality but that they improve with time.
